Haute Couture Oriental Style Dress, 1980s
An utterly breathtaking true haute couture vintage dress from c. the mid 1980's by legendary French designer, Yves Saint Laurent, couture numbered 59969. In the lightest silk satin jacquard with a delicate and feminine watercolour print throughout. The wrap style front zips up the side and fastens with six silk covered popper fastenings and hook and eyes to secure, creating a billowy, deep neckline that flatters the bust and adds sex appeal without being so overt.
The shoulders are sculpted with the smallest, daintiest 30's inspired shoulder pads (made of stiffened layers of cotton, not foam). The most striking thing about this timeless, refined dress is the wide obi style belt, which matches the oriental aesthetic of the dress and flatters the waistline, tying so elegantly in the back into a sophisticated bow as to be expected from YSL.
Of course, as with all haute couture, it has been fully constructed by hand to the highest degree, with a silk charmeuse lining in the skirt and the bodice being unlined to retain the billowy, airy qualities of the silk on the blousy top. Such an incredible piece of fashion history and a true investment piece.
